by Bill Ludwig

1.
When he was just a boy, his early teens Delivery from door-to-door Always in a rush to get em out on time Hurry to deliver more Running and a-leaping 'stead of going 'round Fences and a-hedges in a single bound The Running Newsboy born Speeding out there ev'ry morn Oh, run on Shufflin Joe, run on Run on, Shufflin Joe Not one man faster at the starting gun Be it steeplechase or on the road Lickin any challenger from miles around When he crossed the finish there was just one sound There goes Shufflin Joe McCluskey, The winner is Shufflin Joe! At MHS, then Fordham Flash The champ on every track he stood He showed off all his stuff on the Olympic stage But came home every chance he could No one ever touched him in the steeplechase All the town came out when he ran our road race With his hearty laugh and friendly, smiling face The greatest runner we have known Oh, run on Shufflin Joe, run on Run on, Shufflin Joe Not one man faster at the starting gun Be it steeplechase or on the road Lickin any challenger from miles around When he crossed the finish there was just one sound There goes Shufflin Joe McKlusky, The winner is Shufflin Joe!

At the height of the day When the old church bells ring At the top of the Main street in town There’s a bustle of life On the walk down below In the City of Village Charm The City of Village Charm There’s a proud history By the Old Cheney Mills The Silk City we all once were known Where the Union and Keeney Mills Were clear across town In the City of Village Charm The City of Village Charm (chorus) From the top of Case Mountain You’ll see ‘cross the land Neighborhoods, commerce, clear open space, farms Brooks, rivers, reservoirs Lakes, hollows, ponds In the City of Village Charm The City of Village Charm Hackmatack, Hockanum Salters and Globe Porter and Case Reservoir Hop Brook and Folly The Bigelow Brook In the City of Village Charm The City of Village Charm (chorus) Talk a walk through downtown All the faces you’ll see Eyes hopeful, determined to keep keeping on I proudly hang my heart up by its string In the City of Village Charm The City of Village Charm

about

Bill Ludwig was named Official Town Troubadour of Manchester, CT, USA in March of 2018. With 2023 being the Bicentennial of the founding of his town, it is the perfect time to release a collection of the songs Bill has written for his town!

This first single is the Official Song of The Manchester Road Race - held every Thanksgiving in Manchester, CT, USA. The song was written in honor of Manchester's most famous runner - "Shufflin'" Joe McCluskey!
